andys transplant

it was just before christmas 1998 when andy started to feel unwell ,he visited the doctors and then sent to hospital for further test ,the day before newyears eve andy was addmitted with kidney failure ,we remember sitting on a bench outside brighton hospital on newyears eve watching the fire works at midnight ,new years day andy had to have emergancy neck lines in so they can do dialysis but his veins kept collapsing but they done it in the end ,andy got better and was allowed home after aweek or so.andy had to have a little operation so they could dialise him properly ,he had a fistula in his arm ,were a vein is joined to a artery so they can put these needles in which stays in his arm while he was on dialysis, after that he had to attend hospital every monday, wednesday, and friday for dialysis ,he was very ill alot off the time and had to give up his job which he loved ,he used to drive around the country and deliver hire tools ect,as time went on the hospital offered andy dialysis at home,so i went to hospital with andy for about six weeks so they could train me to put andy on this dialysis machine ,it was very scary, the dialysis needles was huge ,we both learned together andy learned to set the machine up and i learned to connect him to the machine ,i had to put two big needles into his fistula,i couldnt do it at first and i even popped it once but it wasnt long before i got the hang of it ,we had our bedroom adapted for the dialysis machine and all the s medical stuff deliverd and had a date set to dialise at home ,it was the 13 october and we were watching tv when the phone rang andy answered it it was the hospital they said to andy get your bags packed if you want this transplant ,we were amased because he wasnt on the transplant list that long ,a ambulance came for us as i went with him we arrived at kings collage hospital at midnight and was put on a ward for blood test ect ,funny thing is he was in bed 13,a few hours later the doctor told andy he was a perfect match and that he was going to be the 13th patient to have this double transplant at that hospital,we hoped it wasnt going to be unlucky ,anyway im going to leave it there and come back to this tomorrow hope who ever reads this dont find it to boring and read tomorrow,x
